Elegy for Cello (2025)

Elegy for Cello (2025) is a deeply personal work written in memory of the mother of one of my closest friends, who cared for me and several of my friends when we were young. Her sudden passing in Tokyo became the inspiration for music centered on remembrance, loss, and affection.

Originally conceived for violin, Elegy soon suggested other instrumental voices, particularly the cello and clarinet. In the cello version, the instrument takes on an intensely lyrical and vocal character, with long melodic lines unfolding freely through flexible rhythm and rubato. Rather than dwelling solely in grief, the music reflects the warmth of memory and the enduring presence of someone who was an important part of our lives.
